Join our Harambee Delaware Community

Harambee Delaware is a fiscally sponsored project of the Delaware Community Foundation that convenes nonprofit founders and leaders of color virtually once a month for meetings that build community, build our capacity for scaling up our organizations, and build our collective power.

Harambee is a Kenyan tradition that means “all pull together” in Kiswahili. Harambee is a call for unification, a tradition of self-help within a community, and a model of fundraising, philanthropy, and meeting community needs.

We’re building a powerful collective that includes organizations such as: The Connect; Black Mothers in Power; Harper’s Heart; Delaware Adolescent Program, Inc.; Ubuntu Black Family Wellness Collective; I Am My Sisters Keeper, Inc.; Native Roots Farm Foundation; and more! Join us!

Example Topics Covered in Harambee Delaware

Here are some of the topics covered during Harambee Delaware sessions. In addition to these topics, we will continue to create sessions tailored to the needs of the group and changes in the nonprofit landscape.

We provide an overview of the funding landscape (corporate, foundation, individual, public sector, etc.) and we have an honest conversation about how to best navigate fundraising in Delaware as a nonprofit leader of color.

This session is particularly helpful for those of us who are trying to get better at clarifying our vision for internal or external audiences, outlining our theory of change, and communicating the long-term or systemic impact of our work (METRICS!!!).

During this session, we discuss questions such as:
  • How do you determine how much money you really need to run your organization (including adequate staffing and overhead)?
  • How do you balance presenting an aspirational budget vs. a conservative budget?
  • How do you ensure your organizational budget and project budgets adequately capture your operational and overhead expenses?
  • How do you invest in your operational infrastructure while money is tight?
  • What sort of projections should you be doing to ensure sustainability and an accurate long term picture of your organization?
  • How do you get the right support with your financial management when/if you do not have a finance person on staff?

Many of our organizations are underresourced and understaffed yet we persist and make substantial impact in our communities. This comes at a great cost to us personally and to the long-term sustainability of our work. In this session, we discuss how to take care of ourselves and set up structures that will allow for longevity and increased effectiveness.
